About the Department

Department of Community Medicine is situated in 6th floor of Academy Building of Nilratan Sircar Medical College, Kolkata. It occupies the whole 6th floor of Academy building. It has been shifted in its current position in Academy Building in the year 2011 before which it was in the Dr Subhas Mukherjee building.

Vision of the department: To ensure developing competent physicians who will cater health care needs of the citizens of India by rational utilization of scarce resources.

Mission of the department: Providing adequate teaching and training of physicians who will assess the community needs both for seek and well and plan and administer services to meet those needs and to empower the people to achieve and maintain a good level of health.

The Department has the following components:

  1. Rural Health Training Centre: It’s situated in Hariharpur BPHC, Mallikpur, Baruipur, South 24 PGS. The whole BPHC including all its staff and activities are under administrative control of the Principal, NRSMC. Apart from Hariharpur BPHC Amdanga Rural Hospital and Chanditala BPHC are also under the administrative control of Principal, NRSMC and are used as Rural Health Training Centre of the Department of Community Medicine, NRSMC. MBSS students in different Phase-I & III attend RHTC for their training/teaching purposes. Interns are posted in RHTC for a period of three weeks for training about the health problems of rural people via conducting OPD duty under supervision, having 1st hand knowledge about the implementation of various National Health Programmes, functioning of Community Health centre, conducting survey, arranging health camps, celebrating various Public Health Days, conducting behavior change communication camps, house to house visit for collecting health information and providing health talks etc. A three storied residential hostel is situated at RHTC, Hariharpur where interns have to stay as it’s a residential posting. Hariharpur BPHC is 32 KM away from NRSMC and Students/Interns and staff/faculty are provided with transport by Bus/SUV.

Urban Health Training Centre: The UPHC of KMC ward no.53 at Entally is under control of the Principal, NRSMC and is utilized as the Urban training centre, Department of Community Medicine, NRSMC, Kolkata. Interns attend here for one week to have an exposure to the health problem of urban people, specially the urban poor via conducting OPD duty under supervision, implementation of various National Health programme, functioning of UPHC, other health facilities like sub- 

  1. centres/AWC, DOTS clinic/Malaria-FP clinic. Students are brought to UHTC to give them an overview of Urban Primary Health Care system-UPHC/SC/AWC etc. It’s 2 KM away from NRSMC and students/interns and faculty/staff are provided with transport e.g. Bus/SUV.
  2. Field Practice area for implementation of Family Adoption Programme: Slums in KMC Ward No. 36 are utilized for FAP implementation. It is used after obtaining necessary administrative approval of Chief Medical Health Officer (CMHO), KMC. It’s situated about 1.0KM away from NRSMC. Students/Staff/Faculty are provided with transport (Bus/SUV) to reach the slums. Good level of collaboration is maintained with the members of Urban Local Body/Community leaders/NGO/CBOs for FAP implementation.
  3. Department Proper: It has enough space which contains:-
    1. One Lecture Theatre of 250 capacity, fully Air-conditioned and equipped with modern teaching-learning AIDs like LCD projector, Board, Sound systems etc.
    2. Five Demonstration room of 60 capacity
    3. One Library with 275 books and 50 Journals
    4. One seminar room with 35 capacity
    5. One Public Health Laboratory
    6. One Research Lab.
    7. One Museum with around 150 specimens of Public Health importance
    8. One Cold Chain room with provision o f 24 hours air conditioning
    9.  One office room
    10. One room for PGTs
    11. Rooms for all categories of faculty and support staff
    12. Separate Lavatory for staff/male-female faculty

  1. Department performs different activities:

  1. OPD/IPD/Emergency services in RHTC & OPD services only at UHTC
  2. Faculty of the department provide services at General OPD, NRSMCH
  3. Department has one immunization clinic in the Out-Patient-Department (OPD) building, NRSMCH where routine immunization for Children/Pregnant as well as well adult immunization as recommended/needed by the patients of different departments/ staff/students are carried out in all working days in a week from 9:00 AM to 2:00PM.                                                                   
    1. Department provides regular counseling services to:                                                                                                      
      1. Breast feeding/infant and young child feeding (IYCF) at routine immunization clinic
      2. Kangaroo Mother Care at routine immunization clinic
      3. Family Planning at routine immunization clinic/FAP field practice area/RHTC/UHTC
      4. WASH
      5. Balance diet during lactation period and in childhood
      6. Growth monitoring of children
      7. Vaccination of children & pregnant mothers
