WELCOME TO DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRIC SURGERY

                        The Department of Paediatric Surgery, N R S M C & H, Kolkata, is the largest Paediatric Surgery department in Eastern India. It was initiated under the guidance of one of the pioneers of Paediatric Surgery in India Prof. Subir Kumar Chatterjee in the year 1969. In 1978 MCh in Paediatric Surgery course was started by this department & is continuing till date. In January 2004 MCI recognized the MCh course (Retrograde recognition since 1981). No of PDTs getting admission in the course till 2012 was 2 (two). In 2013 no of seats was increased to 6 (six).

                        Aspiring Paediatric Surgeons from all over Eastern India (Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand) & even Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra & Uttar Pradesh  have trained here & the now working successfully in their own states as teachers as well as practioners.

PD Program

Paediatric Surgery Department Post Doctoral Trainee Programe:

  • MCh Paediatric Surgery course is being conducted in the Department since the academic session 1978, with the current annual intake of six students per academic session.                                                                                                                                                   
  • Clinical exposure: The outpatient department (OPD) runs 6 days a week. The department also has follow up clinics for Paediatric cases with Bladder bowel abnormalities, Hepatobiliary disorders. The residents also attend to patients in 60 bedded IPD round the year with exposure to emergency management of neonates as well as Paediatric Surgery cases up to the age 12 years.  
  • Advanced Laparoscopic procedures, Endourologic procedures & Corrective surgeries for most of the common Congenital & acquired conditions are performed here.

  • Clinical case discussion once weekly
  • Combined grand round fortnightly
  • Faculty lecture once a month
  • Special academic sessions organized by the Department:
  • Guest lecturers involving various disciplines

  • Workshops (e.g. Research Methodology, Biostatistics, Good Clinical Practice)
  • Participation in local, regional, national conferences by Faculties and Residents with paper presentations and invited lectures therein
  • Engagement of MCh in teaching and training of MS General Surgery students and students of B.sc & M.sc Nursing courses.
